Stokke Xplory Stroller

By Donna August 16, 2017 Regular Strollers

Researching regular strollers to review, I found the Norwegian premium brand Stokke. They do manufacture a variety of different strollers and prams. The new flashy toy the have is the Stokke Xplory. What intrigued me was the design and the ability to adjust the height of the infant seat on the fly.

design

The Stokke Xplory is a gorgeous stroller. You will steal the show everywhere you go! I would describe the look as modern and clean. Thin yet sturdy and with a distinct structure. No frippery or any other distracting or unnecessary design elements.

As usual, upon receipt, I unbox and assemble the stroller. Very easy as there are not many elements to assemble. Before first use, I carefully inspect the manufacturing quality and materials used.  The Stokke Xplory does give a high-quality feel, and the fabrics seem very durable and water repellant. The seams had no loose visual threads and sewn very well.

The frame and seat assembled do provide an exceptional look and guarantee that you will draw attention wherever you go. It’s probably down to taste if you like it or not. I love it very much. Minimalistic and elegant. At first, I thought the stroller to be nimble due to its appearance, but it is quite the opposite. I’d say somewhat bulky.

Handling

The handling of the Stokke Xplory has its pros and cons. I did not like all aspects that I encountered in my review. Somewhat disappointing for me was the folding mechanism and folding space that the stroller requires. It’s not so easy to fold the stroller. You will need both hands, and there are a few tweaks you need to do to compact the stroller for transport. This is far from the one hand folds that other strollers do provide. I’d love to see Stokke improve on this in future model revisions.

I did love the maneuverability. The rubber wheels and bearings do offer superior movement on any flat and paved surface! I did use the stroller also on gravel tracks and was slightly disappointed. It’s not the end of the world, but missing suspension or shock absorbers make for a bumpy ride. My boy did not complain at all as the seat, and the harness is well padded, but again I prefer other strollers that I tested for off-road strolling.

With regards to jogging, I did not even dare to try this stroller as a jogger. In my opinion, this is just not possible and can also be considered unsafe with this stroller. There are plenty of other models that you can use for jogging with your kid.

Various positive notes for me would be the fabrics are attached with zippers on the top. You can open the zipper to provide airflow on hot days. Underneath the material of the canopy, there is a very light mesh that does not obstruct airflow but still provides cover to a certain degree. Great design

Adjustable seat height

The crucial prominent feature, however, is probably the adjustable seat height. It blew my mind. What a marvel of engineering! Whoever came up with this idea deserves a medal. My husband is considerably higher than me so for him to be able to raise the seat height is invaluable. He confirmed that it’s much more comfortable to handle and take care of the kid when compared to another.

Hitting the same curb is the fact that you can take your kid with this stroller out for restaurants. You don’t need to look for restaurants that provide with child seating (which is becoming more and more difficult somehow in my opinion). Just take your stroller and raise or lower the seat to the height of the table. We used this a lot since our boy is now a bit bigger and behaves considerably better than a few months ago. We love going out for Lunch on the weekends or an early dinner on weeknights. I do also think that my boy is calmer because he can sit in a familiar environment (his stroller) with all his toys attached and snacks within reach. We did try to go out for restaurants, but I thought that after a short while he started getting anxious and we ended up having to leave early and taking the main course home. Just alone for this feature id probably recommend this stroller!

Flexibility

Another great feature is that through the frame design you will have lots of leg space to push the stroller. Some strollers kind of get in the way of your feet and with the Stokke Xplory, you will have plenty of space. A Very positive feature that I liked.

This stroller provides a lot of versatility in the way you can attach the seat. Refer to below image for a visual aid on what you can do with this stroller/frame. Because every kid is individual, some like facing forward and some prefer keeping the parent in sight. Or you could also just change on the fly.

Safety

The Stokke Xplory provides the necessary security features for a stroller and those are actually of high quality. Missing suspension and handbrake definitely restrict you from jogging with this model. Refer to our other reviews for dedicated jogging strollers.

What I miss with this model is a wrist strap. Even if used only as a stroller I would recommend to attach the stroller to yourself. Better be safe than sorry…

Harness

Padded five point harness that provides comfort and security. Always strap your kid with the harness!

Brakes

The parking brake locks the rear wheels and is foot activated.

Included items

With the Stokke Xplory, I have yet another very expensive stroller in the review. But there are also a lot of extras included that provide great value that otherwise would need to be purchased such as rain cover, mosquito nets and padded inlays for newborns etc.

  • 1. Xplory Chassis
  • 2. Seat
  • 3. Stroller Canopy
  • 4. Visor for Canopy
  • 5. Baby Pad
  • 6. Seat Handle
  • 7. Harness Protector
  • 8. Rain cover

★★★★★ 5 out of 5 stars

We love our Stokke. Small and easy to maneuver in shops and cafes. I really wanted something that was small and didn’t have the daggy basket on the bottom that I would inevitable fill to the brim with stuff! We have the Stokke nappy bag and shopping bag, both of which have plenty of room. The shopping bag expands to be quite large. I like that the nappy bag size means that I can only take what is necessary – it means you have to plan and pack well which is perfect for me because otherwise, I would end up carting around stuff I don’t need.

I love that the baby is high to maintain eye contact with us and out of reach of most dogs. I would say this is a perfect city/shopping pram – We also have a three-wheeler jogging pram with large inflatable tires for long walks which is much more smooth, but this is what I would expect.

I love that once baby has the head control you can use the pram as a high chair at cafes. Easy to get it and out of the car and fits easily into our boot (we have a Toyota Kluger). The design does mean you can’t hang shopping bags from it, but I think this is actually safer as you shouldn’t hang any weight from any pram and he stoke handle means you can’t do this without thinking.

I like that it looks different to the normal run of the mill prams which all look very similar. We bought second hand for $400 including seat and bassinet – I’m not sure that I could justify the new price, regardless of how much I love it!

★★★★ 4 out of 5 stars

It is easy to maneuver for sure. Much easier than the shopping carts in any supermarkets. The wheels turns really smoothly and with the med size wheels, it runs over most grooves on the floor rather smoothly.

I have been to slightly muddy terrain and grassy terrain. They are all good. No difficulty with getting stuck whatsoever, if not a bit squashy.

It isn’t cosmetically durable, as scratches land on the hardware easily. As for the fabric part. It was good for a while, rather stain resistant, but the resistant seems to fade over time and some stain seems to be permanent. Washing it wouldn’t remove it. You can use it as a high chair as long as you aren’t cosmetically picky about it.

Been using it since my toddler is 6 months old, she is not slightly over 3 and is using it. She is much more willing to stay on this for long periods of time compared to other prams I have used.

Bugaboo Buffalo

By Donna July 8, 2017 Regular Strollers

Unpacking the delivery to this fantastic piece of equipment is an experience in itself. I got so excited after my order the wait was almost unbearable. Thank god for Amazon prime delivery!

There are not many reviews available online, probably due to the steep asking price for this beauty. I do understand that this stroller is not for everybody. I did, however, read a lot about it. The more I read, the more excited I got and finally pulled the trigger. Uff! What an emotion. Now let’s get to the nitty-gritty.

Design

The Bugaboo Buffalo is just a pure beauty! I love the fabrics used. My review model was the Navy Blue color. The Handlebar has faux leather grips. It may not be real leather, but it sure feels good and looks stunning! Wow. I think this must be the most pretty stroller I have ever had in my hands.

The Frame seems a bit bulky, but it’s not that wide. I love the sleek and clean look it has. The minimalistic approach also has its benefits with regards to maintenance. It makes cleaning much more comfortable. I am getting carried away about this stroller. The quality is up to the highest standards encountered in my other reviews from Thule models.

Let’s see some images to illustrate why I’m raving so much about this stroller.

Handling

I like this stroller a lot. The design is brilliant. From the fold to the change of bassinet to a regular seat. It’s all easily manageable by myself, and I consider myself not especially good at mechanicals. The way to operate the stroller is reasonably intuitive.

Firstly I noticed the wheels. They are non-puncture foam filled wheels. This provides suspension to some degree but great benefit and convenience with regards to maintenance. You will never have a flat tire! One of the more significant downsides when operating a stroller with pneumatic air filled wheels. But this is down to personal preference.

The Buffalo is a cross-country stroller according to the manufacturer, so I wanted to test this feature. The suspension works very well, but there are others that do have a smoother ride especially when on gravel or off-track; for example the Thule and  Bob strollers. Air filled wheels do make a difference as well as the pneumatic suspension on the BOB Stroller. I would not recommend jogging with the Bugaboo Buffalo Stroller. However, on regular strolls, the rides where adequately smooth and my kid did not complain at all. He would have if it were uncomfortable. But for a stroller to be genuinely countryside and cross-country compatible I do recommend either pneumatic air filled wheels. Please refer to my other reviews of jogging strollers that include this feature if you want this.

Another great feature is the ability to switch the direction of the seat. Depending on the desire of your passenger you can have them facing to the front or facing backward looking at you. My son tends to want to see me most of the time. He does occasionally fuss around and I simply switch the direction of the seat on the fly. It’s really convenient.

A really nifty feature is the compatibility to attach other manufacturer car seats. This is the first brand that offers this or the first that I saw in any case. You can find a compatibility list with the manufacturer here.

The Handlebar is height adjustable in order to accommodate parents of various heights. It is not adjustable in angle though. but the height is the most important. This one does it perfectly.

Included features

  • rain cover
  • faux leather carry handle
  • sun canopy (extendable)
  • understeat basket
  • chassis / wheels
  • base bassinet fabric

Safety

This stroller provides only the essential safety features. As it’s not an advertised jogger, I am kind of okay with a missing handbrake for example. But for a stroller in this price range, I really would have expected all safety features to be included. Read the detailed descriptions of the standard features such as 5 point harness, parking brake, and a wrist strap.

Strap

A (short) wrist strap to attach the stroller to yourself is included.

Harness

Padded 5 point harness that provides safety and comfort while out and about with your little precious. A notable mention is that the harness is really easily adjustable to change without rethreading! Really like this.

Brakes

Parking brake foot activated

This stroller is awesome! Our son needed to sleep in it for the first two weeks of his life and he LOVED it. It’s easy to use and really beautiful. We got compliments wherever we go. It’s expensive but worth it.

★★★★ 4 out of 5 stars

We purchased the Bugaboo Buffalo Classic Collection for my baby. We were advised this was a special edition of the Buffalo, it is a lovely grey colour with a black frame and then inside of the bassinet/mattress are quilted in a cream fabric. It also came with a coordinating bag and a rain cover.

The pram is extremely easy to maneuver, although we had a little trouble on some sandy ares trying to push the pram (we later discovered that locking the front wheel would probably have made this much easier). It is quick and easy to setup and put away in the car. It is a little on the heavier side but I don’t find putting the pram in and out of the car an issue. We are currently using the bassinet with the pram and it is a bit bulky in the back of a small SUV, we don’t have much room to put anything else in there. We are hoping when we move to the seat there will be a little more room.

The main reason I wanted to buy the Buffalo was so we could have a pram that would grow with our child. The frame is extremely sturdy and it will be able to support my child as he gets heavier. Everything is extremely well made.

★★★★★ 5 out of 5 stars

I bought the limited edition Buffalo in grey melange with black frame and so far I love my Buffalo. I chose this over the Chameleon due to the all-terrain nature of the wheels (we live near a few unsealed parks so we need a pram that moves smoothly away from paved footpaths). I also like the design and feel it’s more aesthetically pleasing than the other Bugaboo models. It’s easy to pull out and pack away back in the car. It is a touch heavy but due to the fact you can unfold it in one flip, it doesn’t make me regret choosing this pram in any way. The storage basket is large and fits everything I need. It moves beautifully and the adjustable handlebar makes it comfortable for anybody to push regardless of height.

Baby Jogger City Mini GT

By Donna December 22, 2016 Regular Strollers

The Baby Jogger City Mini GT is hands down my favorite stroller for sole urban usage. Although not advertised as a dedicated jogger, it does provide some limited running capability when used on asphalt. I would not recommend the City Mini for off-track jogging. Also with a newborn under six months care needs to be given when considering jogging with the stroller. Your kid will not have the neck stability yet, and the head could bounce around uncontrolled. I recommend jogging from 6 months upwards.

From running errands to going to the park with the toddler or going for grocery shopping. I was pleasantly surprised about the maneuverability and level of comfort the stroller provided. The City Mini GT was the first Stroller that I purchased for private use when my son Jackson was born. I bought the travel system and was very pleased with the ease of transport and seamless transfer from car to stroller to the house. I was able to transfer my son while sleeping which was a big deal. New parents out there will know what I mean. If your child is sound asleep the last thing you want is to wake them up. You cherish every quiet moment.

Design

I like the design of this stroller very much. Modern and but still elegant. The materials and the manufacturing finish seem excellent quality to me. The seams are well finished. I didn’t find any lose threads unlike with other strollers.

The City Mini GT is very aesthetically pleasing. Modern and fresh yet still very sturdy. I think it looks terrific. I wish there would be more color choices but black universally matches the most, so it’s okay. Combined with the excellent materials used I felt that I had made a great purchase and received a superior product of high quality.

Handling

As already mentioned above, this is not an intended jogging stroller. I did go on a few runs in the suburbs (3 miles or more) and was not disappointed. The suspension does absorb a lot of the shocks from small debris on the sidewalk. However, I would not recommend to use it for off-track runs. The fact that the tires are not pneumatic just really don’t promote this. Other strollers are better for pure off track jogging (Forrest and countryside tracks). On the plus side, you will not have flat tires and thus less maintenance but more convenience.

I’m not a fan of the storage compartment on this stroller. The access is obstructed, due to the frame of the stroller. The basket did suffice to run several errands and small shopping adventures. But if you plan on bigger hauls you should bring other storage options along.

But the best feature hands down is the ONE pull handle folding mechanism. One pull and you hold the folded stroller in your hands. It also folds very compact and is ideal for transport in your car. The stroller is very easy to handle in my opinion. The superior maneuverability sold me on this stroller. Once you have pushed this stroller around a bit, you know the manufacturer must have used quality bearings on the wheels. You feel like the stroller is gliding over the floor and you need almost no force to push it.

The stroller carseat combo is super convenient to use once the base is installed correctly in your car. The padding in the carseat is excellent and I my boy feels very comfortable in the seat. The harness straps adjust quickly to the needed size. You need to get this right otherwise your kid won’t be adequately protected. Remember, Kids until the age of 18 months should drive backward facing. In case of an impact, you don’t want to put the strain on your kid’s neck because they don’t have enough strength yet.

Safety

The Baby Jogger City Mini GT has all the basic safety features. The hand operated parking brake is different to other strollers and simplifies the handling to a certain extent.

The canopy can be adjusted to 3 positions and provides UPF 50+ protection. Plus it is rather big and can almost fully cover your passenger. Sun protection is important for infants. As their skin is still very thin and fragile sunburns are to be avoided at any cost. Kids under the age of 1 year should avoid direct sun contact according to dermatologists.

One feature I am dearly missing is a wrist-strap. However, you can DIY very easily. Quickly grab some random cord, braid or string lying around and ty a loop for your wrist and attach the other end to the stroller handle.

Canopy

UPF 50+ canopy that can be adjusted to 3 different positions. Fully extended it almost covers the passenger completely.

Brakes

The parking brake is hand operated to give you full control and keep your hands at the handlebar.

Harness

5 point harness to safely secure your passenger.

Best Stroller Out There!!

Baby number 6 and this is the best stroller we’ve owned. The maneuverability functionality as a jogger is phenomenal. Extremely lightweight and folds up quickly and easily. Takes up minimal space for a stroller.

Love Love love GT

I bought a different three-wheel stroller and it was very big and hard to carry when folded. Also, the front wheel would wiggle/shimmy when walking giving my baby an awful ride. When I bought my first stroller, my mom was telling me to get the City Mini GT and I didn’t listen because I thought the price was too much. 8 months after buying my first stroller, I bought the City Mini GT and had to tell my mom she was right. I wish I would have bought it my first time around. It is lightweight, smooth ride, great sun shade folds with one hand, and so much more. I have told two friends about my learning and they have both bought the City Mini and also love, love, love it!

Just the right size.

It was my dad-duty to select the stroller, but my wife ended up making the decision when she tested the Mini GT at the store. The GT is just the right size, not too bulky but also not too small and flimsy. We use this with the Britax infant seat car seat adapters for easy click-and go. My only gripe was that I originally planned for a Chicco infant seat, but the required the much larger adapter. I ended up going with the Britax because it only requires two small pieces that connect to the connectors where the snack tray would click into. Aside from that, this stroller handles great. Built rock solid and maneuvers easily with one hand.
